At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Sampson is writing Senator Bruce in thanks for his efforts to get him an appointment in the Revenue department, but the position as detective does not appeal to his sense of honor. He says however if there is anything the Senator needs help with he would be glad to return the favor bestowed upon him.
