At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The Chaplin of the U.S. Navy writes Senator Bruce to say he will be in Washington in August, and hopes to see him then. Kane also asks Senator Bruce to send him a copy of a bill introduced by Senator Hamlin that is relative to Naval Chaplin's. Kane also mentions sending a book he wrote that is to be printed on to the Senator. There is an accompanying docket GLC09400.075.2
