At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A letter from Hazelwood asking Senator Bruce for money owed, he says he has previously sent the senator a letter but had at the writing of this letter received no reply. There is also a mention of a man by the name of Jinnings killed a man by the name of Reinhart. He was caught but has since escaped jail.
