At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A letter from Hall concerning his son, who he left in charge of the Post Office when he went on a trip. His son is accused of stealing 3 hundred dollars of Post Office money. He is requesting help from Senator Bruce to help keep his position.
