At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes of the implications of having been charged to a chemical weapons company; instead of being shipped as a unit, they will all be assigned to different parts of the service - infantry, field artillery etc. Mentions some of the rules that he has received concerning guard duty, and a session that he participated in regarding the handling of rifles.
