At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Capture of the City of Mexico by Cortez" dated 1870. Depicts close combat between armored spanish soliders and Aztec warriors, August 13, 1521. Engraved from orignal artwork by Alonzo Chappel in the possession of the publishers at time of engraving.
