At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Capture of the Works at Petersburg" dated 1865. Depicts Union troops triumphantly climbing uphill. In the background Union soliders stand atop a hill raising the Union Flag. In the Foreground a solider lies wounded in branches. Engraved from the original painting by Thomas Nast in the possession of publishers at time of engraving.
