At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Attack on Fort Wagner" dated 1864. Depicts close combat between African American Union troops and Confederate forces, defending Fort Wagner, July 18, 1863. African American troops attempt to break through the Confederates defensive line. Engraved from the original painting by Thomas Nast in possession of the publishers at time of engraving. Engraver unknown.
