At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Attack on Knoxville" dated 1865. Depicts a scene from the Battle of Knoxville, November 17- December 4, 1863. Union soliders defend Knoxville from a Confederate attack. In the center of the image a Union solider shoots a Confederate solider attempting to break through the Union's defensive line. Engraved from an original painting by Thomas Nast in possession of the publishers at time of engraving. Engraver unknown.
