Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newspaper issue of New-York times, dated May 11, 1865. Reports Queen Victoria's condolence to Mrs. Lincoln as well as other expressions of sympathy from international heads of state on the assassination of President Lincoln. Also contains an article on the dissolution of the American Anti-Slavery Society, including speeches from William Lloyd Garrison, Frederick Douglass, Anna E. Dickinson, and Senator Henry Wilson. There is also local news, financial news, and stories from New York and Europe, as well as many advertisements and announcements.
