At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked "Plate 35." Depicts pickets trading for coffee and tobacco between the fortified lines during a truce. the enemy's works, protected by abattis and cheveaux-de-frise, are seen in the background, with groups of soldiers on the parapet. The landscape is dominated by left over tree stumps. The forest was probably decimated to make the fortifications in the background. Actual size of the image without the margins is 27.7 x 40.3 cm. Outline from matting is faintly visible. Title and image information taken from the table of contents from GLC02199. Paper is brittle and edges are damaged.
