At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Published by the War Department and printed by the Government Printing Office. Orders are for 1869, the same year it was published. Contains 35 page index of names and subjects at the front of the book. Spine says "C.Q.M.O. Dept. Platte. Alex J. Perry." Orders No. 1-86 for the year are printed; several are very long. Shelf ware at edges of cover and spine; corners are slightly damaged. A few of the documents are signed but the signatures are illegible. Shelf ware at edges of cover and spine.
