Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Printed by George W. Bowman, public printer. Divided into various sections, each with its own unique pagination. Inscribed to "T.J. Haines Capt. A.C.S." Hand written table of contents of the 111 General Orders issued over the course of 1861. Several fold-out charts contained within. Hand written notes throughout. Several of the orders are signed by future brevet brigadier generals William Whipple, Edward D. Townsend and George D. Ruggles.
