At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Contains a map depicting events of the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, along with various reports on the battle, which took place 1-3 July 1863, ending with a Union victory. Includes reports on the siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi, which had continued through May and June of 1863, finishing 4 July 1863 with a Union victory. Reports on various Civil War generals and events. Also contains a map entitled "Carlisle, Pa. Bombarded by the Rebels, July 1st."
