At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses going to Richmond, Virginia to meet his company. Reports that the company is not organized yet and that it might take awhile. Mentions that Captain Haskell has not arrived yet with his men. Explains that he does not want to be mustered into Confederate service until the company is organized because if he is, Maxcy Gregg, the commander, can place him in any company. States Alick Haskell and Frank Frost are there, and Prickney Seabrook is planning on joining the company. Mentions that the men have been covering their own expenses since they cannot enter the camp yet. He longs to be with her and does not know what he will do if his company does not organize. Hutson was engaged to Colcock in 1861 but she died in late 1861 before they were married. He was a Corporal, 1st South Carolina Infantry, during the Civil War.
