At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Concerns the cession of Menomonie land in Wisconsin and the remuneration they will receive. Authorized by President Andrew Jackson. Treaty arranged by John Dougherty, United States agent for Indian Affairs, Joshua Pilcher, United States Indian sub-agent, and the leaders of the Otoes, Missouries, Omahaws, and Yankton and Santee Bands of Sioux on 15 October 1836 (and ratified on 15 February 1837).
