At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collection features a bound scrapbook and various documents relating to the military and civilian life of William C. Alberger. An inventory exists for the documents separated from the scrapbook, which are housed in a folder with the scrapbook. These items may have once been in the scrapbook as well. The collection contains two broadsides discussing the recruitment of African American troops, two cards inviting Alberger to attend military dinners, and correspondence from Buffalo Sheriff R. H. Best to Alberger regarding suppression of city riots and attendance at an Independence Day celebration. The collection also includes two notices from Buffalo's freemason lodge notifying Alberger of meetings. The content of the bound scrapbook has not been inventoried.
