Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The envelope has a image of seven ships in a circle, within that circle it Harper's Ferry, and Rats leaving the ships to go to Harper's Ferry. the ships are labled Norfolk, Pensacola, Manassas Gap., Mississippi, Savannah, Charleston, and Washington. The caption reads ""When I wish to catch rats, I first stop heir holes." Gen'l. Scott."
