Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The envelope has a image of two hands, the top one the fingers are labled: J. Davis, Floyd, Stephens, Cobb, and Brag. the bottom hand is closed around a few men. The caption reads "Gen Scott being asked what course he intended to persue in regard to the rebels, answered by simply closing his hand."
