"President's Message" gives a synopsis of Davis's message of 8 December regarding Confederate losses and Lincoln's offer for prisoner exchange. A letter to the editor examines the work of John Foster in an essay, "Improvements of Time." Several "Questions for Self-Examination" are printed for morning, evening, and general. "Notes on the Times" reports on the Union return to Chickamauga, Grant to supercede Meade, General Morgan crossing the Ohio River, and the loss of the Yankee Monitor "Weekhawen" amongst other items. On the back page, a woman writes about "Woman's Mission" as centered around her home.
