At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"General Bragg's Report" provides updated information regarding a piece published a few days prior, "General Bragg's Official Report of the battle of Murfreesboro." "Forrest's Forces" describes a Yankee defeat by Confederate forces near Rome, led by General Black and General Forrest. "From Fredericksburg" reports on the movements of the army, near the Rappahannock river.
