At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Success of General Imboden: Yankees Retreating & Burning Their Stores" includes a report from General J.D. Imboden indicating that his forces are still in pursuit of the Union army. "Skirmish Below Kingston, N.C.," excerpted from the Chronicle and Sentinel, describes the bravery of the 56th North Carolina. "The Yankee Raid in N.E. Alabama and Northwest Georgia" includes a letter from C.A. Smith, a conductor on the Rome Railroad, to C.H. Stillwell, the Superintendent of the railroad. A flattering obituary entitled "The Death of General Tracy" is reprinted from the Macon Telegraph, and commented on by the editors of the Confederacy. Also includes an analysis of recent events, entitled "The Yankee Raids in Mississippi."
