At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"An English View of the War," an article excerpted from the London Times, includes a subtitle which reads (partially damaged): "...The Strength of Charleston -- Vicksburg Impregnable -- An English View of the Yankee Conscription." In excerpts reprinted from the Charleston Gazette, "Yankee Account of the Preparations for the Late Attack on Charleston" describes the circumstances of the impending seige in 5 sections: "The Delay," "Removing the Obstructions," "The Monitor Fleet," "Condition of Fort Sumter," and "Other Rebel Works."
