At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Movements of the Enemy" gives a brief description of events in South Carolina. Within the section entitled "The Special Richmond Correspondence," "The Vote on the Tax Bill" discusses bills brought before the Confederate Senate. In "Kentucky's Peril," reprinted from the Louisville Journal of March 17th, W. G. Brownlow warns the state of Kentucky about the imminent approach of the Union army.
