Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Maryland's Crisis, A political Outline, by W. Jefferson Buchanan" summarizes a pamphlet which argues that Maryland was "predestined to become the victim of Yankee insolence and outrage." "Another Victory at Vicksburg! One Gunboat Sunk, One Disabled, and Two Driven Back" includes two army dispatches giving details of the battle, signed by "Nestor". "The City Burned & Evacuated by the Abolitionists" refers to events at Pensacola.
