At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A letter from John B. Baldwin to James A Sedon, Secretary of War, is printed as "The System of Impressment," regarding seizures of private property by the government. "Treatment of Disloyal Persons. Important Letter from Gen. Halleck to Gen. Rosecrans," reprinted from the New York Herald, is written by Henry W. Halleck as General-in-Chief of the Union Army to Major General William S. Rosecrans.
