At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"The Railroads and the War," mentions the blockade, complains that the railroads are not sufficiently managed to distribute sustaining resources throughout the South. "Destruction of the Town of St. Mary's" reports of a Black regiment, led by abolitonists, attacking and looting estates and liberating slaves. "Affairs at Pensacola" notes multiple small events in the area. Includes accounts of troop movements and battle reports, advertisements, and local news.
