At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Lieut.-Gen. Scott's Opinion," reprinted from the National Intelligencer, includes many remarks made by General Winfield Scott. "Items From the Richmond Dispatch" includes a description of a battle in Kentucky and a preport of forgery. "Yankee Accounts from New Orleans" discusses reports by a correspondent from the New York Times stationed in New Orleans. Includes accounts of troop movements and battle reports, advertisements, and local news.
