At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Prints army correspondence on General Stuart's movements. "Who is Responsible for the Defeat at Corinth," describes the campaign as "an unfortunate blunder," mentions General Price and General Lovell. "Vice President Stephens Addressing the People" describes a speech given by Alexander H. Stephens as Vice President of the Confederate States, predicting that the north will "lapse into anarchy and despotism," and calling on Southerners to plant cotton and clothe the soldiers. "Yankee Movements on the Coast" reports on Union forces arriving in South Carolina. Includes accounts of troop movements and battle reports, advertisements, and local news.
