At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Prints army correspondence on "What the Government Has Done and is Doing for the Sick, Wounded, and Destitute Soldiers." An article, "Great Democratic Meeting in New York," prints various resolutions and speeches, including speeches by John Van Buren and General Winfield Scott. "Bragg Reported Falling Back" reports on the movements of General Bragg's army in Kentucky and Tennessee. Includes accounts of troop movements and battle reports, advertisements, and local news.
