At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Salt from Virginia" details an act "to provide for the production, distribution, and sale of Salt in this Commonwealth, passed October 1st, 1862." The following note, "By the Governor of VIrginia: A Proclamation" signed by Governor John Letcher and Secretary George W. Munford. Includes accounts of troop movements and battle reports, advertisements, and local news.
