At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Features a printing of President Lincoln's preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, dated September 22, 1862 and signed by Lincoln and Secretary of State William H. Seward. Title reads: "By the President of the United States -- A Proclamation." Also features a poem by Reverend K.P. Birch of La Grange, Georgia titled "The Raid of Death." Includes accounts of troop movements and battle reports, advertisements, and local news.
