At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

An article, "Test Vote on Arming Negroes" reports on a vote in the House of Representatives. Also includes a war report, "Sherman Has Evacuated Germantown". Also prints a draft of a bill from President Lincoln which would compensate states that abolish slavery. Includes accounts of proceedings in the U.S. Senate, troop movements and battle reports, advertisements, and local news.
