At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

An article, "Notorious Yankee Colonel Killed", reports the death of Colonel Wyman of the 16th Massachusetts regiment, and details a scandal involving the Colonel and a society lady of New York, Mrs. Captain James Brennan. "Morgan Forever" details rebel heroism. Also includes a printing of articles from Northern newspapers, titled "Late Yankee Talk". Includes accounts of proceedings in the U.S. Senate, troop movements and battle reports, advertisements, and local news.
