At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

An article titled "Cobb's Cavalry in the Battle," prints two letters written by a soldier in Cobb's Cavalry, stationed near Richmond, to his wife in Atlanta. Other articles include: "Casualties in the 'Toombs Rangers,' 20th Georgia Regiment" and " Any Cotton Among Us Belonging to Traitors?". Includes accounts of proceedings in the U.S. Senate, troop movements and battle reports, advertisements, and local news.
