Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Subjects include the Evacuation of Yorktown, The Destruction of the Virginia and Mississippi, and the Defeat of General Curtis by General Hindman at the Battle of Pea Ridge. Advertisements for food, goods, and other miscellaneous services. There are military post orders which include a curfew for slaves and free people of color. Pages are bound together. Archival tape is used throughout the issue.
