At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

General Grant states "I should have liked to have seen you ... about ... utilizing the negroes down about Grand Junction, Tenn. In writing on that subject for my book I had to rely on memory." States that the first volume of his personal memoirs is in print. Accompanied by a description written by General Eaton (refer to GLC05485.02.02). Written in pencil.
