Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

re: description of the journey from Rushville, "where we left the RR", to the Pine River Agency. He also notes the general air of "stability & comfort" at the Agency - the prosperity of the farms, the "cheerful" disposition of the people, the number of schools and churches. Hartsuff also renews his acquaintance with "old Red Cloud" and other chiefs he has met before.
