At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Handsome image inscribed "W.T. Sherman. General." Imprint on back "Imperial Carte DeVisite by Brady." Pencil note of previous owner on back: "became Gen. in 1869. ta[ken at] 49 [i.e., in 1869]. Edges have been slightly trimmed affecting the print.

Citation Guidelines for Online Resources

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.
