At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Foster, Richmond, Va. Oversized card. Handwritten identification on back: "Old Sorrel. Stonewall Jackson's war horse he was on this horse May 2nd 1863 when he was mortally wounded and died the 10th 39 years old. The horse died at Soldiers Home Richmond Va. 36 years old."
