At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Three-quarter length, seated portrait of a very young soldier wearing an uncommon hat. His canteen reads "J. H. [illegible]. Co. A. N.J.V." Ruby glass. CASE: Stamped paper on wood with vine pattern and gold edging on both the exterior and interior of the case. Case thickness 1.8 cm.
