At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Seated, half length portrait of a young private wearing military waistcoat and ring. The ring and military buttons have been painted gold, and the waistcoat is open except for bottom button. Ruby glass. CASE: Stamped paper on wood with a flower design surrounded by a starburst and vines. Top and bottom of the case are separate. Case thickness 1.6 cm.
