At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thin red border on recto. Subject has been severly wounded in both eyes, both are swollen shut. His hands rest in his lap. Graphite inscription on verso "WIA Port Republic, VA. WIA Petersburg 6-9-62 6-18-64 at G'burg." Ink inscription on verso "Sergt John W. Shelow, Co A 110th Pa." Photographers imprint on verso: "From Nobell General Hospital, U.S.A. Portsmouth Grove, R.I. Address 'J. A. Williams, Post Office Box 507, Newport, R.I.' The Negative of this Picture is preserved for two years."
