At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Graphite inscription on verso "Return to ORB" "B586" "4592/setup 6-1/138" "WH" "218." Photographers imprint on verso: "Brady's Album Gallery. No. 491. Wounded at Savage Station, After the Battle of 27th June, 1862. The Photographs of this series were taken directly from nature, at considerable cost. Warning is therefore given that legal proceedings will be at once instituted against any party infringing the copyright."
