At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Graphite inscription on verso "Rocklecom" "Civil War Veteran Wearing Crepe From Lincoln's Funeral" "Guards--Rare 5.00." Ink inscription on verso "MFC." Photographers imprint on verso: "Photographed by S. D. Wilson, N.E. cor. 9th & Spring Garden Sts. Philadelphia." Cancelled blue two-cent tax stamp on verso.
