Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thin purple border on recto. Subject is wearing a forage cap signifying the 8th regiment, and is holding his sword with both hands in front of himself. Graphite inscription on verso "10." Photographers imprint on verso: "Gray & Herron Gallery of Artistic Photography No. 229 Sixth Ave. Duplicates of this can be had at any time."
