Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Kiernan received his commission as Brigadier General on 8/1/1863, retiring from the army 2/3/1864 due to health problems. Graphite inscription on verso "Aug 1868." Ink inscription on verso "James L Kiernan Brigadier General Vols. USA" "May 1864." Photographers imprint on verso: "Published by E. & H.T. Anthony 501 Broadway New York from Photographic Negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery."
