Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Large crowd gathered in front of Lincoln's home. Inscription on recto "Entered according to the Act of Congress, by S.M. Fassett, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the United States, for the Northern District of Illinois." Graphite inscription verso "With Indiana Delegates & citizens of the West generally." Photographers imprint on verso: "S.M. Fassett's New Gallery H4 & D6 South Clark St. Chicago."
