At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Image of the remains of a cannon which appears to have been shelled out of effecitveness. A lone soldier sits and guards what remains of the piece. Graphite inscription on verso: "Dupe. A Silenced Gun. 66." Numeric notation on verso: "504." Publisher's imprint on verso: "Published by E & H T Anthony, & Co., New York."
