Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image shows three men at a tent, with one looking through an eyepiece, surveying the action out of the frame to the left. In the background are numerous sailboats and what appears to be a large steamboat. Inscription on verso: "Gardner." Numeric notations on verso: "XI-I" and "799."
